In the year 2009, the project “Definition and Management of a Touristic Destination in the Northern Cluster Area Cuatro Balam in Petén, Guatemala” was approved by the Multilateral Investment Fund, part of the Inter-American Development Bank, in cooperation with Global Heritage Fund (GHF) and the Foundation of Cultural and Natural Maya Patrimony (PACUNAM). This project aims to contribute to the conservation, development and positioning of Reino Kan as a touristic destination, through strengthening local communities and their capacities of providing tourist services that ensure an enriching experience and quality standards to visitors.
Currently, the Plan for the Touristic Product Development; Market Research and Marketing Strategy has been completed as the basis for the planning and development of this destination. Moreover, we have initiated the Training and Technical Assistance Program, which is appointed to impart over 25 specific training courses and technical assistances to the communities of Carmelita, Uaxactún, and La Máquina, in northern Petén.
In March 2011, training workshops on Hygiene and Food Safety were given to members of the Tourism Commissions of Carmelita and Uaxactún. Additionally, technical assistance was provided to small diners of the area to help with the implementation of improvements that can help ensure the quality of services provided.
In addition, the Diagnosis and Analysis of the Legal Framework for the Mirador Area and Its areas of Influence has been presented and approved. The document will be published as a reference in the field and will be distributed to all local actors. At the request of beneficiaries, a Business Improvement Program is being implemented to help improve management, operational and financial performance of three organizations: Carmelita Cooperative forest concessionaires, Management and Conservation Organization (OMYC), and Integral Forestry Association San Andrés, Petén (AFISAP).
Finally, it is important to mention that as an effort to initiate a joint agenda of work for the environmental performance of the country, between the private sector, environmentalist and the Government, FUNDESA in alliance with PACUNAM, organized in August 2010 the I Forum of Environmental Performance in Guatemala. This event counted with the participation of over 150 representatives of government, the organized civil society, industrialists, environmentalist organizations, credited diplomatic body in Guatemala, among others.
